Quote Du Jour:
"When I was walking in Memphis, I was walking with my feet ten feet off of Beale. Walking in Memphis. But do I really feel the way I feel?" (Marc Cohn, "Walking In Memphis")

There are a few things in my life that I tend to love and hate at the same time. The first few hours after midnight are probably near the top of this list. I love them because I find it easier to think about things at that time of day. On the other hand, if I'm busy thinking... I'm not busy sleeping... and that makes getting up and being productive so much harder. (0230)

Sorry that there was no entry Saturday. I was off on a weekend trek to west Tennessee, northeast Arkansas and the bootheel of Missouri with Jessie. Every year, I put together a July 4th fireworks extravaganza for a few friends and family. A couple of years ago, the size of my show kept me from buying my pyrotechnics locally (and at retail prices).

So, Jessie and I make an annual trip to Missouri and pay about half of what we would here at home. On the night before the big buy, we usually crash in Memphis and take in the sights, smells and sounds of Beale Street. This year was no exception.

I love cities with character... cities with a soul. Memphis is one of those cities. It's been around for a while. It has an interesting history. It has an identity all of it own. There is no mistaking Memphis for any place else. Another place that would easily fall into this category is New Orleans. Each of these places has so much to see and do (New Orleans a little more than Memphis). These two communities also have strong musical roots, and that's another reason I guess I like them so much. Memphis has its blues... New Orleans has its jazz... and you can feel the music flowing through each of them. (0249)
They are supposed to file formal charges today against the alleged shooter and hostage taker in Thursday's drama (see Sunday's entry). I'll keep you up to speed on future developments. I have a feeling our bad guy is looking at some quality time in the penitentiary. (0251)
I no longer think I have a small self-destructive streak...
I know I have a large self destructive streak...

I invited Lindsay up for July 4th. Of course, Jessie will be there, too, helping me out with the show. It's gonna be an interesting mix. There will be plenty of emotion and lots of explosives. I can only hope the combination of the two isn't in any way deadly. (0312)

No word on the charges. I talked to the sheriff, the jail administrator, the state police, the clerk of courts and some people from the prosecutor's office. Each told me a slightly different tale. I don't think they are doing it intentionally. I just think communication between agencies is a big problem in my part of the world. (1802)
